Sinners at the Hands of an Angry God

By Jonathan Edwards -Their foot shall slide in due time- Deut. 32: 35 In this verse is threatened the vengeance of God on the wicked unbelieving Israelites, who were God's visible people, and who lived under the means of grace; but who, notwithstanding all God's wonderful works towards them, remained (as ver. 28.) void of counsel, having no understanding in them. Under all the cultivations of heaven, they brought forth bitter and poisonous fruit; as in the two verses next preceding the text. The expression I have chosen for my text, Their foot shall slide in due time, seems to imply the following doings, relating to the punishment and destruction to which these wicked Israelites were exposed. That they were always exposed to destruction; as one that stands or walks in slippery places is always exposed to fall. This is implied in the manner of their destruction coming upon them, being represented by their foot sliding. The same is expressed, Psalm lxxiii. 18. ...

Deny Yourself

(Matthew 16:24-26) by Rev. Dr. Sergio E. Arevalo, Jr. Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? HE MUST DENY HIMSELF. This phrase connotes that we need to give up something. However, in the theological parlance, this means three things: 1) No to self and yes to God. It is difficult thing to say no to ourselves, since it means struggle with...

“Love Came Down at Christmas”

by Rev. Sergio E. Arevalo, Jr., PhD "We Christians should love God via people in need. and our love should reveal through giving away ourselves and possessions to others. Only by this we can feel and experience the true spirit of Christmas." Most parts of the world nowadays celebrate Christmas in December in their own ways; other parts celebrate in January, like in Egypt. Even unbelievers celebrate with Christians having business motives in mind, since they have a perception of a commercialized Christmas. However, what is Christmas for all of us? What is the real reason of having Christmas? As a starting point let us read what Jesus Christ said 2000 years ago as recorded in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (KJV). According to Fr. Martin Luther, the father of Reformation, this verse is a 'gospel in miniature' or the gospel in a nutshell,” because it ...
